SJK (C) Tai Tong Sandakan elevates cultural education to new heights

SANDAKAN: In a vibrant celebration of Chinese traditional arts, SJK (C) Tai Tong here officially inaugurated its 24 Seasons Drum Troupe on July 18, marking a significant step in cultural preservation and youth education.
The ceremony showcased student performances that brought to life this ancient art form, which symbolizes the harmony between nature and human life through its rhythmic patterns.
The 24 Seasons Drum, with roots in China’s agrarian traditions, represents the cyclical changes of nature through its dynamic performances. The newly formed troupe will serve as a platform for students to connect with their cultural heritage while developing discipline, teamwork, and artistic expression.
Liau Fui Fui, an alumna of SJK (C) Tai Tong and Chairman of Jetama Water Sdn Bhd, played a pivotal role in the troupe’s establishment by donating the full set of drums.
“This is more than just about preserving tradition—it’s about giving our youth the tools to express their identity and creativity,” she said during the emotional handover ceremony.
Datuk Frankie Poon Ming Fung, Tanjong Papat State Assemblyman commended the school’s efforts, stating, “Such cultural programmes exemplify how the arts can bridge communities in our multicultural society.”
“The allocation of funds for this programme demonstrates the Sabah Government’s commitment to preserving cultural heritage while fostering national unity,” said Poon who also attended the event.
The event concluded with an energetic performance by the newly formed troupe, symbolizing the vibrant future of traditional arts in Malaysian education. With its dual focus on cultural preservation and character development, the 24 Seasons Drum Troupe stands as a model for how schools can keep traditions alive while preparing students for a multicultural world. – James Leong
