Two more local authority staff remanded in RM200,000 graft probe

SANDAKAN: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Sabah has obtained a five-day remand order for two more local authority officers suspected of soliciting and accepting approximately RM200,000 in bribes in exchange for infrastructure repair projects.
Magistrate Yong Ching Hong granted the remand until 28 July 2025 following an application by the MACC on Thursday morning.
According to sources, the two suspects—a man and a woman in their 20s to 30s—were arrested between 7 and 8 pm on Wednesday night while giving statements at the Sandakan MACC office.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects were allegedly involved in the corrupt scheme from 2022 to 2025. This arrest follows five previous detentions in the same case on Tuesday night,” the source said.
“It is believed that the suspects received around RM200,000 in bribes through bank transfers into their personal accounts from contractors in exchange for approving projects involving the repair of pedestrian walkways, fences, and the reconstruction of a mosque.”
Sabah MACC Director Datuk S. Karunanithy, when contacted, confirmed the arrests and stated that the case is being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009 for accepting bribes in connection with official duties. He also indicated that more arrests are expected in the near future. – James Leong
