Down memory lane for 70 senior singers

KOTA KINABALU: A nostalgic memory will be brought to life as 70 senior citizens compete in the Voice in the Shadows – Our Concert.
A 4D stage will be set up to offer the audience a mini concert atmosphere on August 17 at the Putera Ballroom in Bukit Padang.
The countdown to the competition began yesterday, with singers of yesteryear from Sabah, Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia taking part.
A preliminary round will be held on August 16 to shortlist the finalists, said Organising Chairperson Datuk Eliza Goh during a press conference at a hotel.
“The competition, to be sung in Mandarin, Hokkien and Cantonese, will also see veteran Malaysian songbird Irene Tan launch her fourth album. She is a former Astro singer,” said Eliza.
The album, titled One Seed, signifies Irene’s intention to plant a seed in Sabah for the competition to grow.
One of the objectives is to promote the tourism sector, as many people from Kuala Lumpur, including senior citizens, have never been to Sabah, she said.
“We will also be promoting the tourism spots in Sabah. We will be bringing them to see all the exciting places,” said Eliza.
“We also want to encourage interaction between Sabah, Peninsular Malaysia and Sarawak, as some businessmen will be attending, including a musang king plantation owner from the peninsula,” she added.
She said the proceeds from the sale of 40 to 50 tables during the competition will go towards helping Primary Six pupils who excelled in their studies to continue their education in private independent schools.
All profits derived from the event will be used to support underprivileged pupils, managed by the Kian Kok Alumni Association, she said.
Also present was co-organiser Dato’ Tan Seng Huat. Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew is expected to officiate the competition. – Wu Vuide
