TAWAU: A Saturday evening accident at Mile 9, Jalan Apas left a female jogger critically injured after being struck by an out-of-control four-wheel-drive (4WD) vehicle. The collision involved two vehicles and occurred around 7.55pm.
Tawau District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin stated that the incident began when a 39-year-old man was driving his multipurpose vehicle (MPV) from Taman Ria 11 toward the airport. His vehicle was suddenly rear-ended by a 4WD, causing the latter (4WD) to lose control, veer off the road, and hit the 41-year-old victim, who was jogging with friends.
The jogger sustained serious injuries, while both drivers escaped unharmed. Police later arrested the 57-year-old 4WD driver on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. The case is being investigated under Section 44(1A) of the Road Transport Act 1987, Jasmin said.
Jasmin urged the public to avoid jogging on roads at night, citing poor visibility, speeding vehicles, and the risk of intoxicated drivers.
“For safety, use designated jogging paths or well-lit areas instead,” he advised. – James Leong
