KOTA KINABALU: Sabah took a significant step in supporting Malaysia’s climate commitments by hosting a key workshop on fluorinated gases (F-gases) on Aug 5.
Organized by the Sabah Climate Change Action Council through its Secretariat, the Sabah Forestry Department, in partnership with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the event strengthened capacity for national climate reporting under the Paris Agreement’s Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF).
The workshop aimed to raise awareness on Malaysia’s climate reporting obligations, with a focus on F-gases and their role in the national greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory. It also fostered dialogue among stakeholders in Sabah to improve collaboration on emission reduction strategies. This initiative is part of a broader Malaysia-Japan cooperation agreement to enhance institutional and technical capabilities in preparing Malaysia’s Biennial Transparency Reports (BTRs) for the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
The event saw strong participation from 27 organizations across government and private sectors, reflecting broad engagement on the issue. Attendees included representatives from the Ministry of Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship (MIDE), the Environment Protection Department (EPD), as well as key industry players from cooling, refrigeration, and industrial sectors.
Major shopping malls, hotels, and industry groups such as the Federation of Sabah Industries also participated, highlighting the collective effort needed to manage and reduce F-gas emissions effectively.
