Liew calls for action after recent fight on island near Semporna

KOTA KINABALU: The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment (KePKAS) has expressed deep concern over the recent incident that occurred at Pulau Timba Timba.
Its Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew, however, clarified that Pulau Timba Timba is not within the designated area under the management or enforcement purview of Sabah Parks.
“Nevertheless, following the incident, we are actively coordinating with local authorities to ensure a thorough investigation is conducted. The Ministry understands that the local district office and council have carried out all the necessary actions to restrain parties from transacting unauthorised business dealings on the island,” she said in a statement on Thursday.
According to Liew, earlier, an eviction notice had been issued to illegal inhabitants on the island by a relevant authority.
“All businesses on the island must adhere to all existing requirements. Those who are not licensed or do not possess any licences must not be allowed to carry out any businesses or given authority to collect fees,” she asserted.
Emphasising that drastic measures by all relevant authorities are needed to ensure all tourists are safe in Sabah, the Minister lamented that it was most unfortunate that incidents like fighting occurred at tourist destinations.
“We have been informed that police have arrested those who were involved in the fight on Pulau Timba Timba.
“It is hoped that there will be no further incidents after this,” she said.
Liew advised all tour operators to prioritise safety precautions and avoid bringing tourists to unsafe locations, adding: “We urge all parties to work hand in hand to provide safe tourist’s experience in Sabah.”
