LAHAD DATU: A man was killed and another injured after the four-wheel-drive vehicle they were in skidded and plunged into a seven-metre-deep sewerage trench here yesterday.
The 7.00 am incident occurred at Jalan Pantai, heading towards Lahad Datu Town, involving a double cabin four-wheel-drive vehicle (4WD).
The driver was believed to have lost control of the vehicle, causing it to crash through a road barrier and plunge into a sewerage trench that was under construction.
Personnel from the Lahad Datu Fire and Rescue Station arrived at the scene approximately five minutes after receiving the emergency call.
“We extracted both victims using rope equipment and a stretcher,” said Operation Commander PBKII Mohd Noor Asri.
Medical officers from the Ministry of Health (KKM) who arrived later confirmed passenger Muhammad Almadi Hassan, had died at the scene.
Driver Wilyamil Ahajul, 34, suffered a broken arm and was taken to the hospital by ambulance for further treatment.
The victim’s body was handed over to the police for further action while the firemen installed safety barricades before concluding their operation at 9.07 am.
In a separate incident, Lahad Datu police arrested a man at an entertainment outlet after a urine screening tested positive for drugs during a narcotics operation on Thursday night.
OCPD ACP Haji Dzulbaharin Haji Ismail said the operation by the District Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (BSJND) involved inspections at two entertainment premises.
“A total of 16 individuals were checked. One man was detained after tests on five patrons confirmed he was positive for Methamphetamine, Amphetamine, and Ketamine,” he said.
He emphasised that such operations will continue to ensure entertainment venues are not misused for illicit activities. – James Leong
