SEMPORNA: The Semporna Magistrates’ Court on Jan 29 sentenced nine individuals aged 21 to 46 who were found guilty of various criminal offences. The sentences were handed down by Magistrate Dayang Aidaku Amira Aminuddin.
All the accused were convicted of offences including disposing of stolen property, committing mischief by damaging property, possessing stolen goods, criminal intimidation, and theft. The sentences imposed ranged from a RM100 fine to one year in prison. Four of the accused will also be referred to the Immigration Department for repatriation to their home countries after completing their prison sentences.
Semporna OCPD Superintendent Tan Hiap Wah, urged the public to cooperate with the police by sharing information to maintain security and harmony.
In a separate development in Tawau, police detained two local boys, both aged 14, in two separate raids on Jan 28. They are suspected of involvement in motorcycle theft and the use of fake registration numbers.
According to Tawau OCPD ACP Jasmin Hussin, the first arrest was made in Ambar Park and the second in Taman Semarak. Inspections revealed that a Yamaha Ego motorcycle used by the suspects had a fake registration number and had been reported stolen.
The case is being investigated under Section 379A of the Penal Code. Police reminded parents to monitor their children’s activities, Jasmin added.
Meanwhile, the Sandakan District Narcotics Crime Investigation Division raided an entertainment centre in the vicinity of Mile 4 Jalan Utara in the early hours of Jan 29.
In the operation, assisted by the Sandakan Police Station, nine individuals were detained – five local men, three local women, and one female foreigner – on suspicion of drug use. Urine screening tests found all suspects positive for methamphetamine, amphetamine (Syabu), and ketamine.
All suspects are currently detained under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for further investigation, Sandakan OCPD ACP George Abd Rakman said. – James Leong
