TONGOD: The Sabah Ministry of Youth Development, Sports and Creative Economy (KBSK) has assured that the long-delayed Tongod Sports Complex project will proceed, following a working visit by its minister to the site.
Kuamut assemblyman Datuk Masiung Banah said the visit by Datuk Hj Nizam Datuk Seri Abu Bakar Titingan on Wednesday effectively ended the crisis surrounding the so-called “white elephant” project, stalled since July last year.
“I am satisfied. The minister assured me the project will be given full attention and a new contractor will be appointed soon,” said Masiung, who vowed to personally follow up to ensure speedy execution.
Masiung, who also chairs the SEDCO Group, had lobbied hard to bring the project to Tongod but expressed disappointment with the previous contractor. In December, he pressed KBSK in the State Assembly to revive the abandoned project. He urged the ministry to vet the new contractor thoroughly to avoid a repeat of the issue.
In Sandakan, Nizam also called for the Gymnastics Hall and swimming pool at the Sandakan Sports Complex to be included in tender works this year.
The uncovered swimming pool, he said, needs attention to improve comfort for athletes, especially those in intensive training. He acknowledged budget constraints but said the ministry would seek allocations from both State and Federal Governments to maintain Sabah’s sports facilities at optimal levels.
Nizam praised Sandakan as a recognised powerhouse for high-performance athletes who have brought pride to the state and nation.
“Our responsibility is to provide the best facilities so they can train in comfort,” he said. “Good facilities boost morale and drive greater success.”
