SANDAKAN: A man was killed and his teenage daughter injured after their vehicle was involved in a three-vehicle collision along Jalan Labuk, Batu 9, Sandakan, on Wednesday.
The 6.40am incident involved a Nissan UD lorry, a Proton Iriz, and a Toyota Avanza.
The victim, 55-year-old Ranchanna Hujang, was pronounced dead while receiving treatment at Duchess of Kent Hospital due to internal injuries. His 17-year-old daughter sustained a fractured left shoulder and is currently receiving medical treatment.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the lorry, driven by a 35-year-old man travelling from Mile 8 towards Mile 32, allegedly failed to stop as it approached a roundabout and rear-ended the Proton Iriz.
The lorry then veered into the right lane and collided with a Toyota Avanza driven by Ranchanna that was already inside the roundabout.
The lorry driver and the Proton Iriz driver escaped unhurt, while two other passengers in the Proton Iriz suffered minor injuries. All victims were taken to the hospital for treatment. The deceased’s body was sent to the district hospital Forensic Unit for a post-mortem on Thursday.
The lorry driver has been arrested and will be remanded to assist in the investigation. The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
All three vehicles have been impounded for further inspection, including Puspakom and chemical tests.
In a statement, Sandakan OCPD ACP George Abd Rakman urged road users to drive carefully, obey speed limits, maintain a safe distance, and remain vigilant, especially when navigating roundabouts or during adverse weather, to prevent such tragedies. – James Leong
