SEMPORNA: Two men, including a foreign national, were detained in two separate police operations conducted in the district on Tuesday.
The first operation was carried out by a team of policemen from the District Narcotics Crime Investigation Division in Kampung Bangau-Bangau about 1.15 pm.
During the raid, a 32-year-old Filipino man was arrested after a subsequent inspection found suspected methamphetamine weighing 5.74 grams in his possession.
According to OCPD Superintendent Tan Hiap Wah, the case is being investigated under Section 39A (1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which provides for a minimum jail sentence of two years and whipping upon conviction.
Meanwhile, in a separate operation conducted by 22nd Battalion of the General Operations Force Kunak in Kampung Batu, Semporna, a 42-year-old local man was detained.
The suspect was found with substances believed to be methamphetamine weighing 0.67 grams in his hand. He was subsequently taken to the Semporna District Police Headquarters (IPD) for further action.
This case is being investigated under Section 12(3) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries a maximum fine of RM100,000, or imprisonment for up to five years, or both, upon conviction.
Record checks revealed that the Filipino suspect has no prior criminal record, while the local suspect has three previous records related to drug offences and one criminal record.
