SANDAKAN: A 49-year-old local man died in a collision between his motorcycle and a four-wheel-drive vehicle (4WD) at Jalan Leila in the early hours of Thursday.
The incident occurred about 12.10 am. According to police, the accident is believed to have happened when the motorcyclist collided with a 4WD that was making a U-turn at the traffic light intersection along Jalan Leila.
The victim sustained severe injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The 31-year-old driver of the 4WD and his two passengers were reported to be unharmed.
Following the incident, the 4WD driver was detained and remanded to assist with the investigation. The victim’s body was transported to the Duchess of Kent Hospital Forensic Unit for post-mortem.
District Police Chief ACP George Abd Rakman confirmed that the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving. Both vehicles involved have been seized for further inspection, including mechanical examinations at PUSPAKOM.
He urged all road users to exercise caution and strictly adhere to traffic regulations.
“The public is reminded to obey speed limits, road signs, and traffic lights, maintain a safe following distance, and pay extra attention when passing through intersections, U-turn locations, roundabouts, or during adverse weather conditions to avoid any untoward incidents,” George said. – James Leong
