SANDAKAN: The festive Hari Raya gathering at the residence of State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Jafry Ariffin, here on Monday became the platform for a key discussion on positioning Sandakan and Sukau as the state’s premier twin tourism gems.
A delegation led by Lai King Hang, Founder and Chairman of the Sandakan Heritage Trail, paid a visit to the Minister during the occasion. Lai took the opportunity to emphasise the importance of promoting Sandakan and Sukau as a unified destination showcasing Sabah’s nature, wildlife, and heritage.
According to 2025 tourism statistics from the Sabah Tourism Board (STB), an estimated 50% or more of visitors—primarily from Europe and Australia—headed to the Sandakan and Sukau region. In recent years, it has also become a common sight to see foreign tourists exploring the popular Sandakan Heritage Trail.
While the ongoing Gulf crisis presents challenges, Lai noted that it has also opened new opportunities. He expressed hope that the Ministry would take proactive measures to cushion the impact of the conflict, which may encourage travellers to seek alternative routes—potentially benefiting hidden gems like Sandakan.
