Sabah railway conducts studies on fares, new route

KOTA KINABALU: Industrial Development, Entrepreneurship and Transport Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick said the Sabah Railway Department (JKNS) is undertaking two studies on the state’s railway services.
He said the full reports will be presented to the State Cabinet.
“The studies involve a review of railway fare rates and a feasibility study for a new route from Putatan to Kota Kinabalu, and onwards to the Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park (KKIP) up to Sepanggar Port.
“So far, 90 per cent of the fare study has been completed. It will be presented to the ministry and subsequently to the Cabinet for consideration,” he said after attending the JKNS Excellent Service Award and Appreciation Ceremony.
Ewon said the feasibility study for the Putatan–KKIP–Sepanggar route is expected to take 12 months and forms part of a long-term plan to expand the state’s railway network.
He added that JKNS is also contributing input to the feasibility study of the Trans Borneo Railway project undertaken by the Federal Government.
In addition, the ministry will begin a study on the Sabah Sustainable Transport Master Plan this year, with JKNS involved in both the steering and technical committees.
At the event, 32 JKNS officers and staff received the Excellent Service Award, while another 23 were honoured upon their retirement. – Wu Vuide
