TAWAU: The Sabah Drug and Crime Prevention Organisation (PPDJS) has voiced concern over a recent string of arrests linked to an online fraud syndicate in Tawau, warning that such incidents are damaging the district’s reputation as a trading and tourism hub on Sabah’s east coast.
PPDJS advisor Mohd. Zaki Harry Susanto said the latest arrests have caused unease among the local community, especially as memories of the first syndicate-related arrests in Tawau remain fresh.
He noted that the frequency of police operations in a short span of time suggests that international fraud syndicates are now viewing Tawau as a strategic base for cybercrime.
“Local residents are understandably worried and embarrassed that Tawau’s name keeps being linked to scammer activities,” Zaki said.
“We do not want outsiders to perceive Tawau as a safe haven or paradise for fraud syndicates. This latest case shows that the cybercrime threat is becoming more serious and demands comprehensive action from all relevant parties.”
Zaki was commenting on a recent police operation in the area that led to the arrest of an online investment fraud syndicate.
He also praised the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), particularly the Commercial Crime Investigation Department (BSJK) and its security team, for their swift and effective action in dismantling the group.
“PPDJS extends its gratitude to PDRM for the success of this operation. The breakthrough offers some reassurance to the public that the authorities are continuously monitoring and taking firm action against scammer activities,” he added. – James Leong
