SANDAKAN: The Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) Region 2 Headquarters (MAWILLA 2) successfully hosted the RMN Fleet Open Day 2026 at the naval base here from May 8 to 10.
The three-day event was officially opened by the Eastern Fleet Commander, Vice Admiral Datuk Khir Junaidi Idris.
Organised as part of RMN’s ongoing efforts to strengthen public engagement, the programme gave visitors direct insight into the navy’s roles, capabilities, and its mission to protect the nation’s maritime security and sovereignty.
A wide range of activities and attractions were featured throughout the event, including: RMN assets and weaponry exhibitions, ship tours, tactical and operational capability demonstrations, brass band performances, career exhibitions, government agency booths and local entrepreneur stalls
These events not only enriched the visitor experience but also fostered an interactive and welcoming atmosphere between RMN personnel and the local community.
Beyond bringing the navy closer to the public, the programme helped instil a sense of patriotism, raise maritime awareness, and deepen public understanding of why maritime security is essential to the nation’s stability and prosperity.
RMN extended its highest appreciation and gratitude to all parties who contributed to the event’s success. The strong turnout and positive response reflect the public’s continued support for RMN in carrying out its mandate to safeguard Malaysia’s maritime sovereignty and security. – James Leong
