LAHAD DATU: A 20-year-old man sustained serious injuries after being trapped in his Perodua Viva following a collision with a Proton Saga in front of the PUSPAKOM inspection centre at KM4, Jalan Tengah Nipah early yesterday.
The Fire and Rescue Operations Centre received an emergency call through the NG999 hotline at 5.35 am. A team from the Lahad Datu fire station, located just three kilometres from the scene, arrived five minutes later at 5.40 am.
Operation Commander PBK II Kenny Fred Sikun said three occupants were in the Perodua Viva — one man and two women. Both women managed to exit the vehicle on their own, but the male driver remained trapped. The two occupants of the Proton Saga were unharmed.
Firefighters used specialised rescue tools to free the trapped victim. He received initial medical treatment from the Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) team before being handed over to Ministry of Health Malaysia (KKM) personnel for further care.
Two policemen and three KKM personnel assisted at the scene. Firemen concluded their operation after ensuring there was no further danger at the crash site at 6.15 am. – James Leong
