As Toyota Hilux plunges into Keningau ravine

KENINGAU: The journey of a family of eight ended in tragedy when the vehicle they were travelling in overturned before plunging into a ravine in an incident on Jalan Bingkor, Chanang Hill, here yesterday.
In the incident at around 9.45am, a woman reportedly died at the scene after suffering severe injuries due to being trapped in the four-wheel-drive vehicle.
Keningau Fire and Rescue Station chief Severinus @Mohd Nidzam Sainkui said they received an emergency call regarding the incident at 9.54am.
He said a team of personnel and officers along with machinery and the Emergency Services Assistance Unit (EMRS) were deployed to the scene to assist.
“Upon arrival at the location, the operations team found the Toyota Hilux vehicle in an upside-down condition in the ravine after it was believed to have overturned while descending a steep road.
“Preliminary examination found that a female victim was trapped in the vehicle and the operation to remove the victim continued using special equipment,” he said in a media statement yesterday.
According to him, a total of five victims who suffered injuries were immediately transferred to the EMRS vehicle and rushed to the hospital for further treatment.
Meanwhile, he said, two other injured victims were sent using an ambulance from the Ministry of Health (MOH).
“The female victim who was trapped was confirmed dead at the scene by MOH medical officers and handed over to the police for further action.
“The operations team then carried out further inspections including the risk of fuel liquid spillage at the scene before the operation ended at 11.51am,” he said.

The fire brigade carried out an operation to remove the victim from the overturned vehicle.
