Integrated operation in Tawau nets drug seizures, 28 positive drug users

TAWAU: A two-day integrated anti-drug operation in Kampung Kurnia Jaya has led to significant enforcement outcomes, including the seizure of 50.35 grammes of methamphetamine (syabu), multiple arrests across various drug-related offences, and the detection of 28 individuals who tested positive for substance abuse.
Acting OCPD Supt Wilynton Enchana Watt said Operasi Tapis Bersepadu Bil. 1/2026, conducted from July 7 to 8, was coordinated by the District Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division. The operation mobilised 169 officers and personnel from the Tawau, Semporna, and Kunak district police headquarters, alongside the General Operations Force (GOF) Battalion 14 Tawau, the Marine Police, the Immigration Department, the Road Transport Department (JPJ), and Sabah Electricity.
In a detailed breakdown of the enforcement actions, police opened one investigation under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for drug trafficking, which resulted in the arrest of one suspect and the seizure of 50.35 grammes of methamphetamine. A separate case was investigated under Section 12(2) of the same Act, involving one arrest and the confiscation of 0.24 grammes of methamphetamine.
Additionally, one individual was arrested under Section 30(3) of the Poisons Act 1952, with authorities seizing nine litres of ketum liquid and 2,351.65 grammes of ketum powder. Of the 36 individuals who underwent urine screening, 28 were tested positive for drugs and would be probed under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952
In separate enforcement efforts, 30 individuals were detained and handed over to the Tawau Immigration Department for further action concerning immigration-related offences. Meanwhile, the Road Transport Department issued 66 summonses and notices for various traffic and vehicle violations throughout the operation.
Wilynton affirmed that the police will continue to intensify integrated enforcement operations to curb drug trafficking and abuse, while also reinforcing legal compliance to ensure public safety and security across the district. – James Leong
