TAWAU: Police have arrested a 17-year-old local teenager to assist in the investigation of a rape case involving a teenage girl.
Acting OCPD Superintendent Wilynton Enchana Watt said the suspect was apprehended at approximately 2.05 pm on July 16 in Tawau town by a team from the District Criminal Investigation Division (CID).
Preliminary investigations indicate that the victim had left her home last Tuesday and was subsequently found with the suspect at a budget lodging premise in the town area. The arrest followed a police report lodged by the victim’s elder brother.
The case is being investigated under Section 376(1) of the Penal Code, and investigations remain active.
Meanwhile, Supt Wilynton advised parents and guardians to consistently monitor their children’s movements, social interactions, and daily activities. He also emphasised the importance of maintaining open communication within families to prevent youngsters from becoming victims or engaging in unlawful behaviour.
He further reminded the public against making unfounded speculations or disseminating the victim’s identity, stressing that such actions could hamper the investigation and breach legal provisions. – James Leong
