Two men arrested over alleged extortion case in Tawau

TAWAU: Police arrested two local men suspected of involvement in an extortion case targeting a male victim during an operation conducted at the walkway of a shopping complex here.
Acting OCPD Superintendent Wilynton Enchana Watt, said the suspects were apprehended by a police team from the District Criminal Investigation Division on 27 July following investigations into a police report lodged by the victim.
He said the two suspects are believed to have demanded money from the victim while threatening to disclose a certain incident to other parties if payment was not made.
“Following the arrests, police also seized two mobile phones belonging to the suspects, which are believed to be linked to the investigation,” he said.
Wilynton added that both suspects were detained at the District Police Headquarters to assist with further investigations.
The case is being investigated under Section 385 of the Penal Code for the offence of extortion. – James Leong
