KINABATANGAN: The human-elephant conflict in Mukim Batu Puteh, particularly in Kampung Perpaduan Datuk Mohd Ugi, has escalated to a concerning level.
Wild elephant herds are reportedly growing bolder, venturing perilously close to residential areas, roaming near homes, and foraging for food at villagers’ doorsteps—placing the safety of the local community on the brink of disaster.
According to Azman Amirbek, Chairman of the Village Community Development and Security Committee (JKKK), the situation poses a dual threat: endangering public property while devastating agricultural crops, which are the primary source of income for the residents.
“The risk we face right now is critical. These wild elephants could storm into our homes at any moment, without warning, potentially leading to loss of life,” Azman said on Thursday.
Speaking with a deep sense of urgency, he appealed to the Sabah State Government, particularly the Sabah Wildlife Department, to immediately devise and implement large-scale, effective on-ground solutions.
He emphasized the need for additional enforcement personnel and operational teams, fully equipped with proper gear and expertise, to safely and systematically guide the elephants back to their natural habitats.
Azman revealed that current manpower is severely limited. Operations rely heavily on a single acting officer, assisted by only a handful of staff and village volunteers. Although the volunteers are always ready to help, they lack the adequate training and operational skills required to safely handle large wildlife in accordance with safety protocols.
He warned that without reinforcements and a more comprehensive strategy, the mitigation mission would become increasingly difficult, leading to more destruction of crops, property damage, and escalating threats to public safety.
In light of this, the JKKK urges all relevant authorities to pay immediate attention to the issue to protect the lives and well-being of residents. Swift, well-coordinated, and integrated action is imperative before a more tragic incident occurs.
“The safety of the people must be the top priority. Wild elephants are a national treasure that must be preserved, but human safety and community welfare must be given equal attention,” Azman stressed. – James Leong
