SANDAKAN: Recent enforcement operations by authorities at wet markets, hawker centres, coffee shops, construction sites, and factories have sparked concern among business owners over a deepening manpower shortage in the district.
Datuk George Hiew Vun Zin on Monday made a courtesy call on Sandakan Municipal Council President and Security Committee Chairman, Datuk Walter Kenson, to convey the grievances of local traders—who have complained that frequent checks and arrests of undocumented foreigners are leaving many businesses short-staffed and disrupting daily operations.
While stressing that he has no objection to enforcement action against illegal immigrants, Hiew urged enforcement agencies to draw a clear distinction between undocumented individuals and foreign workers who are law-abiding and legitimately employed.
“Instead of carrying out repeated sweeps in the city centre and commercial districts, I suggest channeling more enforcement resources to the identified black spots where illegal immigrants congregate, for more focused and effective operations,” he said, noting that these settlements are often involved in illegal utilities, crime, and drug-related activities—making them a higher priority for action.
Hiew cautioned that continued crackdowns in commercial areas carry unintended risks for the local economy, as many industries already face acute staff shortages, and large-scale detentions could disrupt operations and dampen economic growth.
“We are not opposing enforcement; we are simply appealing for more precisely targeted operations that focus on areas truly plagued by illegal immigration and public safety concerns,” he emphasised.
In response, Walter assured that the council has taken note of the feedback, and confirmed that future enforcement will be directed primarily at illegal immigrant black spots, with intensified monitoring of social problems arising from such settlements, while continuing to uphold public safety and order. – James Leong
