KOTA KINABALU: A man died after the Perodua Viva he was driving skidded before hitting a tree on Jalan Tun Fuad Stephens, near Anjung Selera, here, early yesterday morning.
In the 4.15 am incident, the 22-year-old victim was said to be travelling from the Kota Kinabalu city centre towards Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS).
Acting Kota Kinabalu District Police Chief, Superintendent Syed Lot Syed Ab Rahman said, based on initial investigations, the victim is believed to have lost control of the vehicle, causing it to skid to the right of the road and crash into a tree.
He said that as a result of the incident, the victim was reportedly stuck in the driver’s seat and had to be removed by the fire brigade who arrived to assist at the location.
“The victim was later confirmed dead at the scene by medical officers from Likas Hospital.
“The victim’s body has been sent to the Forensic Department, Queen Elizabeth I Hospital, Kota Kinabalu for a post-mortem,” he said in a media statement yesterday.
According to him, further investigations will continue in accordance with Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
In this regard, Syed Lot asked for assistance from the public who have information regarding the incident to come forward to assist in the investigation.
He said that any information can be channeled by contacting Investigating Officer, Inspector Royston Ubak at 016-313153 or by coming to any nearby police station.
“The Kota Kinabalu District Police advise all road users to always drive carefully and prudently and obey traffic rules for the safety of themselves and other road users,” he said. – Fardy Bungga
