KINABATANGAN: Three emergency incidents — two car fires and a woman trapped in a lift — were reported in the East Coast. No fatalities were reported in any of the operations.
In Kinabatangan, the Fire and Rescue Station control room received an emergency call at 4.04 pm on Sept 28, 2026, reporting a car fire at a palm oil mill in Tongod. A five-member team was deployed to the location, 131 km away, and arrived at 6.34 pm.
Operations Commander PBK I Azemi Sidan said a Toyota Hilux was destroyed. The fire had already been extinguished before the team arrived. No victims were reported.
At 6.40 pm, firefighters checked the scene to ensure there were no remaining dangers and concluded the operation at 6.55 pm.
In Lahad Datu, the Fire and Rescue Station control room received an emergency call via NGMERS999 at 3.55 am on Sept 29 about a car fire at Kg. Desa Bajau. The firefighting team arrived at 4.04 am after covering 6 km.
A Proton Saga was found 90% burnt. The fire was brought under control at 4.13 am and extinguished at 4.26 am. After ensuring there were no other dangers, firefighters ended the operation. No victims were reported.
Seven firefighters led by PBK II Abdul Salam Ismail were involved in the operation, assisted by two policemen.
Meanwhile, a 63-year-old woman was trapped in a lift at Sri Indah Condominium off Mile 4, Jalan Utara, Sandakan, for more than an hour during a power failure on Sept 28. The Sandakan Fire and Rescue Station was alerted at 8.04 pm.
According to witnesses, the victim was believed to have been trapped since 7.07 pm due to an electricity supply disruption.
The building’s lift maintenance team managed to open the lift doors at 8.14 pm, shortly after the rescue agencies arrived. They found the woman in a weak condition, lying inside the lift. She was handed over to medical personnel to be taken to hospital for further treatment.
