KOTA KINABALU: Sabah is seeking high-quality cattle breeds from Australia to strengthen its beef industry.
Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry Minister Datuk Jamawi Jaafar said the state is exploring a breeding programme that would supply superior calves to trained farmers.
He was speaking during a visit to a cattle farm in Brisbane with Sabah Veterinary Services Department director Dr Zul Bahar Abdul Rashid.
“Calves from the programme will go to farmers who have completed cattle-rearing courses.
“Each will receive high-quality breeding stock that produces premium meat and better returns,” said Jamawi.
He was confident that the industry would improve significantly if Sabah secured the breeds.
The move is part of the State Government’s plan to strengthen the livestock sector and raise farm productivity and incomes.
Also present were Sabah Land Development Board general manager Datuk Syaheddrul R Joddari; Agrimeat founder Olanz Anwar, and its director, Mukhlis Rohaizak.
