TAWAU: A foreigner was arrested after police found a sharp weapon, resembling a knife or short machete, hidden at his lower back during checks following a dispute in front of a supermarket at Jalan Dunlop on Sept 16.
OCPD ACP Rosdi Mat Jusoh said the suspect, aged in his 30s, was detained by a team of police personnel on beat patrol duties after police received information about a dispute at about 1.30pm.
“Upon arriving at the scene, police found two men arguing before checks were conducted.
“A check on the first man found no incriminating items, while a check on the second man found a sharp weapon resembling a knife or short machete, along with a wooden sheath, hidden at his lower back,” he said.
Further checks showed the man did not possess any valid identification documents.
“Police also seized the sharp weapon, about 19 cm long, together with the knife sheath and the clothes worn by the suspect for further investigation,” he said.
He said the case is being investigated under Section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958 and Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.
“Police remain firm and will not compromise with any individual who possesses or carries dangerous weapons without valid reason,” Rosdi added.
“Enforcement action will continue to be intensified to ensure public order and community safety are always preserved. The public is also advised to immediately channel information to the police if they know of or detect any suspicious activities,” he said. – James Leong
