Newborn baby girl found abandoned in oil palm plantation

SEMPORNA: A newborn baby girl, still with her umbilical cord attached and wrapped only in a cloth, was discovered at an oil palm plantation in Kampung Lihak-Lihak here.
Police received a report from a member of the public about 1.07 am on April 25. The baby had actually been found earlier on April 24 at 7.30 pm, and was first handed to the village chief before being taken to the Lihak-Lihak Police Post.
OCPD Superintendent Tan Hiap Wah, confirmed the case in a statement on May 2.
“The infant, estimated to weigh 3 kilogrammes, was immediately taken to Semporna Hospital for medical examination. She sustained no injuries and is in stable condition,” said Tan.
After receiving initial treatment, the baby was handed over to the Social Welfare Department (JKM) for further action.
“The case is being investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code (Concealment of Birth with Intent to Abandon the Child), which carries a penalty of up to seven years’ imprisonment, or a fine, or both, upon conviction,” he added.
