SANDAKAN: Former Tanjong Papat Assemblyman Datuk Frankie Poon Ming Fung fully supported Yayasan Pengguna Negara Malaysia (YPNM) Sabah’s call for the Federal Government to grant Sabah consumers fair and equal access to the SuRIA Home Programme’s rooftop solar rebate incentives under the national renewable energy initiative.
The government’s move to offer rebates of up to RM3,000 for residential solar adoption is a progressive policy that can help Malaysians reduce electricity bills while promoting clean and sustainable energy, Poon said here on Saturday.
“However, Sabah consumers must not be left behind or marginalised in national initiatives. With rising electricity costs and intermittent energy supply challenges, rooftop solar solutions are especially relevant and beneficial for Sabah households and businesses,” he added.
According to Poon, Sabah has immense solar generation potential due to its geographical location and year-round sunlight. Expanding rooftop solar adoption in the state would reduce reliance on fossil fuels, enhance long-term energy security, and advance environmental sustainability.
“I respectfully urge the Federal Government, the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), the Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) Malaysia, the Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS), and Sabah Electricity to give clear assurances that Sabah consumers will enjoy equal eligibility and access to SuRIA Home Programme incentives,” he said.
Application procedures and technical requirements should also be streamlined and simplified to encourage participation across urban, suburban, and rural homeowners throughout Sabah, Poon added.
Sabah must be treated as an integral part of Malaysia’s national renewable energy transition. Equal access to green energy incentives would directly benefit consumers and help build a more resilient, sustainable, and affordable energy future for both Sabah and Malaysia, he further said.
Poon believed that Sabah has the capability and potential to become one of the country’s leading solar energy development regions, provided it receives adequate support and policy inclusion. – James Leong
