KOTA KINABALU: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor has advised people in Tawau, Kunak, Semporna and Lahad Datu to remain calm and follow instructions from the authorities following a tsunami warning issued after a 7.9-magnitude earthquake struck Mindanao in the southern Philippines yesterday morning.
He said the District Disaster Management Committees (JPBD) in the affected districts had been activated to handle the situation.
The Malaysia Meteorological Department said a 0.4-metre tsunami was expected to reach the districts between 10.30am and noon yesterday.
“It is important for the people to remain calm and always adhere to the instructions of the authorities,” Hajiji said.
He added that the State Government, through the Disaster Command Centre, is closely monitoring the situation.
Meanwhile, the tsunami advisory issued by the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) yesterday for coastal areas in Tawau, Semporna, Kunak and Lahad Datu, has been lifted.
“The tsunami advisory issued at 8.36 am on June 8, 2026 was lifted at 12 noon on June 8, 2026,” MetMalaysia said in a Facebook post.
MetMalaysia said the termination of the tsunami advisory is its final update on the earthquake incident unless further developments arise.

Hajiji said the District Disaster Management Committees (JPBD) in the affected districts had been activated to handle the situation.
