SANDAKAN: Tanjong Papat Assemblyman Datuk Frankie Poon Ming Fung visited the site where a boulder crashed onto the road opposite Pau Kung Temple at Jalan Buli Sim Sim on Thursday.
Poon who rushed to the scene on learning about the 10.00 am incident, said he contacted the Public Works Department and other relevant agencies to remove the large rock that had blocked road access.
Traffic policemen were already present to carry out traffic control and ensure public safety when Poon and his aides arrived at the scene to obtain firsthand assess of the situation.
Poon urged all road users to exercise caution and comply with authorities’ instructions while the cleaning up operation was underway.
“Public safety remains the top priority, and swift measures are being taken to resolve the situation,” he added.
There was no damage to properties or casualties reported in the incident.
In an unrelated case, two men and a woman sustained injuries in an accident involving two vehicles and a motorcycle at Simpang 4, Jalan Lahad Datu-Kunak, on Thursday.
The Kunak Fire and Rescue Station was alerted at 11:59 am, but bystanders had already transported two victims to the hospital before the firemen arrived.
A third victim received on-site medical treatment from the Fire and Rescue Department’s Emergency Medical Response Service (EMRS) before being transported for further care.
Meanwhile, quick-thinking neighbours averted further damage when a fire broke out in the backyard kitchen of a house at Taman Alam Indah, Mile 7, on Wednesday.
The Sandakan Fire and Rescue station received an emergency call via MERS 999 at 2:03 pm but arrived to find the blaze already extinguished by residents using water.
No casualties were reported, though the fire damaged 30% of the kitchen area, a water tank, and a freezer. The Sandakan Fire and Rescue Department’s Forensic Unit is investigating the cause of the incident. – James Leong
