KOTA KINABALU: The implementation of the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) Development Plan has proven effective in reviving the state’s economy, strengthening development, and safeguarding the people’s well-being despite various challenges.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the people’s mandate since September 2020 had been fully utilized through the carrying out of a comprehensive development agenda.
“All promises and plans under the SMJ agenda have largely been implemented,” he said at the Sabah Day 2025 Celebration at Padang Merdeka on Sunday.
He said that when he assumed office in September 2020, the state was facing the worst economic crisis in its history.
However, through careful planning under the SMJ 1.0 policy, the situation was restored and the state’s economic performance rebounded to impressive levels.
“Sabah has now emerged as a rapidly developing state, from depending solely on natural resources to diversifying into tourism, agriculture, forestry and petroleum as the main contributors to the economy,” he said.
Hajiji said the SMJ policy is a long-term strategic plan that includes human capital development, effective management of natural resources and administrative efficiency.
He said that during his five-year tenure, significant achievements had been recorded in increased investments and state revenue, as well as strengthening of the government’s administrative structure.
Hajiji also stressed that the State Government places great emphasis on human capital development, particularly in education and youth.
“More than RM1.3 billion was spent between 2021 and 2024 for education and youth development,” he said.
Regarding the Sabah Day celebrations, Hajiji said the historic date serves as a reminder of the people’s spirit to achieve freedom from colonial rule and build a sovereign state.
“This year’s Sabah Day theme, Untukmu Sabah Tanah Airku (For You Sabah, My Homeland), carries a deep meaning — that the state’s future lies in our hands.
“Therefore, let us work hand in hand to ensure Sabah continues to progress and prosper, and for its people to live in unity,” he said.
He added that Sabah Day is not only a platform to remember past history but also an opportunity to appreciate present achievements and plan for the future.
Hajiji called on the people of Sabah to continue safeguarding the harmony and peace enjoyed for so long, while together building a more prosperous and inclusive Sabah.
Head of State Tun Musa Aman officiated the Sabah Day 2025 celebrations. Also present was his wife, Toh Puan Faridah Tussin, and Cabinet ministers.
