KOTA KINABALU: Four men died in a horrific accident involving five vehicles on Jalan Sepanggar, near Taman Jaya Diri, here, early yesterday morning.
In the incident at around 2.30am, the four victims, all in their 20s, were said to be travelling in a Perodua Viva from the direction of Sepanggar towards Indah Permai.
However, upon arriving at the location, the 23-year-old driver is believed to have lost control before skidding to the left of the road and hitting an Isuzu NPR lorry and another Perodua Aruz car.
Acting Kota Kinabalu District Police Chief, Superintendent Syed Lot Syed Ab Rahman said that following the incident, the lorry involved was pushed forward and hit two other vehicles, namely a Nissan Urvan van and a Proton X50.
He said that as a result of the incident, all the deceased victims were reported to have been trapped in the unfortunate vehicle.
“All victims were successfully removed by the fire department before being confirmed dead at the scene by medical officers from Likas Hospital.
“The bodies of all the victims were then sent to the Forensic Department, Queen Elizabeth I Hospital, Kota Kinabalu for post-mortem,” he said in a media statement yesterday.
According to him, further investigations are still underway to identify the cause of the accident in accordance with Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
In this regard, Syed Lot asked the public who have information regarding the incident to come forward to assist in the investigation.
He said that any information can be channeled by contacting the Investigating Officer, Inspector Royston at 016-3130153 or by visiting any nearby police station.
Firefighters helped to extricate the victims trapped in the vehicle.
