KOTA KINABALU: Police arrested a couple with 12,585.28 grams of syabu worth RM402,720 in Tawau on Saturday.
Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun said the suspects, aged 38 and 31, were detained by the narcotic police from the Tawau police contingent at the Tawau post office on March 22.
“Acting on a tip-off, police set up surveillance at the post office parking lot and spotted a red Perodua Bezza car driven by a woman. A man, who was sitting in front, then came out from the car and entered the post office.
“Several minutes later, he came out from the building carrying two boxes and put them inside the car’s bonnet.
“As both suspects were about to leave the area, police intercepted and stopped the car for inspection,” he told a press conference at the Sabah police headquarters in Kepayan yesterday.
Police uncovered several plastic packets containing crystalline substances believed to be syabu with a total weight of 12,585.28 grams and street price of RM402,720.
Jauteh said police investigation revealed that the drugs were smuggled from Peninsular via couriers for the local market.
Jauteh added that both suspects have no criminal record and their urine came back negative of drug abuse.
They are being remanded under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which can carry the death penalty or life imprisonment if convicted.
Meanwhile, a drug mule was caught with 1,014.99 grammes of syabu worth RM30,000 in Beverly Hills, Jalan Bundusan, Penampang last Sunday.
Penampang police chief Superintendent Sammy Newton said the 22-year-old suspect was arrested by narcotic police based on a tip-off at around 8pm on March 23.
“The suspect was carrying a black plastic bag and upon inspection, found a packet containing crystalline substances believed to be Methamphetamine or syabu with a total weight of 1,014.99 grammes and a street price of RM30,000,” he told a press conference at the Penampang police headquarters yesterday.
Sammy said investigation revealed the drugs were smuggled from Peninsular via couriers for the local market, which could supply up to 5,000 drug addicts.
The suspect, a local with previous drug related cases, has been remanded for investigation under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment if convicted.
