One dead, one injured in separate Tawau road accidents

TAWAU: The driver of a Proton Satria was killed in an accident at Jalan Dr Yamamoto here early yesterday.
OCPD ACP Jasmin Hussin said the incident occurred around 5.00 am when the car, driven by a 32-year-old man traveling from Tawau town toward his residence in Kampung Hilltop, veered out of control.
Preliminary investigations indicate the car was believed to have been driven at high speed, causing the vehicle to swerve to the right, skid approximately 50 meters, and collide with an electric pole on the left shoulder of the road, Jasmin said.
Firefighters extricated the victim through the shattered rear windshield, but he was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel from Tawau Hospital, he added.
“We are investigating the case under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless or dangerous driving resulting in death,” Jasmin said.
In another case, a 68-year-old female pedestrian sustained head injuries after being struck by a Proton Saga on Jalan Dunlop on April 26.
The accident took place around 8.45 am when the pedestrian attempted to cross the road from left to right, reportedly outside a designated crossing area, Jasmin said.
The driver, a 41-year-old man enroute from Batu 2 Jalan Apas, to Tawau town, was unable to avoid the collision due to the close proximity, he continued.
Jasmin said, the vehicle suffered damage to the front bumper, hood, and windshield. The victim received treatment at Tawau Hospital.
Investigations are ongoing under Rule 10 LN 166/59, he said.
Jasmin emphasized the importance of using pedestrian crossings, particularly in busy urban areas, and warned against jaywalking to mitigate accident risks. – James Leong
