SANDAKAN: Libaran Member of Parliament Datuk Suhaimi Hj Nasir has pledged full backing for efforts by the State Ministry of Local Government and Housing and the Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS) to elevate Sandakan as the state’s second city, following Kota Kinabalu.
In a statement yesterday, Suhaimi hailed the move as “strategic and visionary,” aligning with Sabah’s holistic development framework and the government’s commitment to balancing growth between the state’s west and east coast regions.
“As the MP representing a constituency closely tied to Sandakan, I wholeheartedly welcome this initiative, which holds profound economic, social, and welfare implications for the people,” he said.
Suhaimi, who first raised the proposal in the 2021 State Legislative Assembly session, emphasized that city status would unlock greater domestic and foreign investment, accelerate job creation, and enhance infrastructure and public services.
“Critically, it will deliver direct spillover benefits to all, from small businesses to youth and professionals,” he added.
Suhaimi stressed that Sandakan’s transformation must centre on the “Rakyat Didahulukan” (People First) principle, where progress is measured not merely by physical development but by improvements in quality of life, education, social mobility, and economic equity.
“This is not just about administrative upgrades or towering buildings. It is about empowering Sandakan’s people comprehensively,” said Suhaimi, who is also Sabah UMNO Information Chief.
He urged collaboration across public and private sectors, NGOs, educational institutions, and local communities to realize the vision.
Highlighting Sandakan’s unique historical legacy, cultural diversity, and natural resources, he called for data-driven, inclusive strategies to ensure sustainable growth.
“Becoming a city is not a political trophy or symbolic status. It is a long-term vision to elevate living standards, strengthen local identity, and position Sabah as a truly advanced and balanced state,” he asserted.
Suhaimi’s endorsement underscores growing momentum for Sandakan’s cityhood bid, framed as a catalyst for equitable development and a testament to Sabah’s regional aspirations. – James Leong
