MATUNGGONG: SMK Matunggong has maintained its excellent performance for nine consecutive years as the best rural daily secondary school in Sabah.
The school also ranked 13th out of 223 schools in the state based on the 2025 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) results.
It recorded a 100 per cent pass rate for the sixth consecutive year, with its School Grade Point Average (GPS) improving to 3.34.
Out of 141 candidates who sat for the 2025 SPM examination, 55 students achieved excellent results with 5As and above.
Women, Health and People’s Wellbeing Minister Datuk Julita Majungki said the achievement proves that rural schools are capable of attaining excellence comparable to others in the state.
“This achievement reflects the discipline and resilience of the students. Success is built on a spirit that does not easily give up, even when faced with challenges,” she said when officiating the SMK Matunggong Student Awards Ceremony 2025.
Julita also presented cash incentives to outstanding students in recognition of their efforts and achievements.
She said the school’s continued success is in line with efforts to make education a key pillar of development, as outlined in her State Election manifesto.
According to her, continuous efforts to strengthen education have contributed to the overall improvement of students’ academic performance.
She also stressed that background should not determine a person’s future, but that discipline and attitude play a crucial role in success.
“Discipline is the key to progress. Success comes from consistent effort, even if the steps are small and gradual,” she said.
Julita also expressed her appreciation to the school administration and teachers for their continued commitment to maintaining and further improving the school’s excellence.
The ceremony brought together students, teachers and parents to celebrate the school’s academic achievements and strengthen motivation for future success. – Wu Vuide
