BELURAN: Police have launched an investigation into a dangerous driving incident involving an express bus that went viral on social media, prompting public outcry over road safety along the Ranau–Telupid route.
The incident is believed to have occurred on 20 August 2026, at about 11.30 pm along Jalan Ranau–Telupid. A public transport express bus was allegedly driven recklessly when it attempted to overtake another vehicle, forcing the driver of the oncoming car to steer sharply onto the road shoulder to avoid a head-on collision.
The 62-year-old local male driver of the express bus escaped unharmed, while the 34-year-old local male driver of the Toyota Single Cab also sustained no injuries in the near-miss.
Initial checks confirmed that both vehicles possessed valid road tax and active insurance coverage. Preliminary inspections further revealed no physical damage reported on either vehicle.
The case is currently being investigated under Section 42 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving. This offence allows for arrest without a warrant.
Following the incident, Beluran OCPD Superintendent Hasan Majid, strongly advised all road users to exercise caution and civility behind the wheel.
“Road users must always comply with traffic laws, practice defensive and prudent driving, and absolutely refrain from dangerous overtaking acts that could endanger the lives of others,” said Supt Hasan in a media statement.
