KOTA KINABALU: Seri Mengasih Centre has launched its newly-renovated Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Training Centre to provide a comprehensive facility for individuals with ASD.
Her Royal Highness Yang Amat Mulia Paduka Puteri Tunku Mariamz binti Al-Marhum Al-Mutawakkil Alallah Sultan Iskandar Al-Haj officiated the event at the centre in Tanjung Aru.
The ASD Training Centre marks a significant step in the centre’s ongoing commitment to specialised support for individuals on the autism spectrum.
The refurbished building is designed to improve quality of life through expanded training programmes, therapeutic interventions and vocational skills development in a purpose-built, supportive environment.
Tunku Mariamz’s presence highlighted the importance of the initiative and the royal family’s dedication to promoting inclusivity and support for vulnerable groups.
Her patronage is expected to bring greater public awareness and backing for the centre’s work in Sabah and beyond.
“We are incredibly privileged and deeply grateful for Her Royal Highness YAM Paduka Puteri Tunku Mariamz’s presence to officiate the launch of our new ASD Training Centre building,” said Datuk Suzannah Liaw, Chairman of the Seri Mengasih Centre Board of Trustees.
“This new facility is a testament to the collective efforts of our dedicated team, generous donors and the unwavering support of the community.
“It will allow us to reach more individuals with ASD, equipping them with the tools and opportunities they need to thrive and reach their full potential.”
The new building includes dedicated classrooms, therapy rooms, sensory integration spaces and vocational training areas.
These are tailored to meet the diverse learning styles and needs of individuals with ASD.
The upgraded facility will support the expansion of the centre’s programmes, including early intervention, educational assistance, social skills training and independent living support.
Established 44 years ago, the centre has been practising the Kololo Method since 2002 in collaboration with Kololo Japan. Seri Mengasih remains the only centre in Malaysia authorised by Kololo Japan to apply this method.
According to Tulip Noorazyze, Chairman of the Committee of Management and Member of the Board of Trustees, the centre has successfully trained students as young as three and has produced many success stories over the years.
The programme also included the handing over of the Akta Jagaan Kanak-Kanak certificate by Sabah General Welfare Services Department Director, Jais Asri to Liaw.
