SANDAKAN: Sandakan is poised to solidify its reputation as Sabah’s premier historical and nature tourism destination with the official recognition of “The First Historical Tree Trail” in Malaysia by the Malaysia Book of Records (MBR).
The announcement was made by Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS) president, Walter Kenson, the event’s guest of honour, ahead of the trail’s official launch on June 28.
The event, jointly organized by the Sandakan Heritage Trail Committee and the Sandakan Tourism Association (STAN), will feature a heritage walk along the newly certified 3 KM trail, which showcases 42 historically significant trees identified with the assistance of the Sabah Forestry Department.
Lai King Hang, founder and chairman of Sandakan Heritage Trail, revealed that the concept of tree tagging was originally proposed by Walter Kenson himself, inspiring the committee to pursue the historic nomination.
“After 22 years of preserving Sandakan’s heritage, this recognition marks a major milestone—transforming our trail into Malaysia’s first certified heritage and tree trail,” said Lai.
Among the trail’s highlights is a century-old tree planted by Harry Keith, husband of renowned author Agnes Keith (Land Below The Wind). Harry Keith, the third Conservator of Forests during British North Borneo, pioneered large-scale forest conservation in Sabah. The tree stands on the grounds of Agnes Keith’s House, a key heritage site in Sandakan.
The Malaysia Book of Records will present the certification at Agnes Keith’s House, with Walter Kenson accepting the honour on behalf of MPS. The event is expected to draw over 250 participants, including 130 Sandakan Girl Guides leaders and students.
Teo Chee Kim, President of STAN, hailed the achievement as a testament to strong collaboration between MPS, the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment Sabah, Tourism Malaysia, Sabah Tourism Board (STB), and the Sabah Forestry Department.
“This recognition will elevate Sandakan’s profile as a must-visit destination, perfectly timed for Visit Malaysia 2026,” said Teo.
With its unique blend of history, culture, and nature, Sandakan’s latest milestone reinforces its position as Sabah’s undisputed heritage and eco-tourism hub. – James Leong
