KOTA KINABALU: A transformative workshop on dyscalculia intervention, held from July 19 to 20 at a Kota Kinabalu hotel, equipped 15 remedial teachers from Penampang District with essential strategies to support students affected by this math-related learning difficulty.
Funded by the Malaysian National Commission for UNESCO and organized by Universiti Malaysia Sabah’s (UMS) Faculty of Business, Economics and Accounting (FPEP), the workshop was led by project leader Dr. Christina Wong Sing Yun.
Dr. Fu Sai Hoe, a prominent dyscalculia researcher and Remedial Officer from Sandakan District Education Office, introduced the NUMI (Numeracy Intervention) framework. Based on cognitive learning theory, the framework uses the “I do – We do – You do” model under the Reconnecting Learning approach to address challenges in number sense, arithmetic, and mathematical reasoning.
“Children with dyscalculia often go unnoticed in classrooms. This initiative gives teachers the tools to ensure these students receive the support they need,” said Dr. Fu during his keynote speech.
Dr. Christina Wong emphasized the value of cross-sector collaboration in inclusive education: “Building strong numeracy foundations for all learners—especially through targeted intervention—is at the heart of our work.” She extended gratitude to the Malaysian National Commission for UNESCO for their vital support.
Participants concluded the two-day workshop with practical techniques and increased confidence to apply in their classrooms, marking a meaningful advancement for numeracy intervention in Sabah. – James Leong
