KENINGAU: The Sabah Chapter of the Malaysian SLE Association (PSLEM) hosted its Lupus Awareness Programme 2025 here recently, educating 60 attendees about Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE).
Under the theme “Stronger Together: Raising Lupus Awareness,” the event featured a talk by Dr. Izdihar Marwani Haji Dahlan, a Senior Medical Officer from Hospital Queen Elizabeth 1. Dr. Izdihar addressed common myths, explained symptoms, and stressed the importance of early detection, prompting active audience engagement.
A highlight was the personal testimony from Lupus patient Ms. Esther, who shared her journey and offered a message of hope, urging fellow patients to stay strong and seek support.
PSLEM Sabah Chapter President Geoffrey Sinn emphasized the event’s goal: “Rallying public support for Lupus Warriors.” He reiterated that while there is no cure,” early diagnosis, appropriate treatment, and continuous support are essential in improving patients’ quality of life.”
PSLEM, established in 1994, provides support to those affected by Lupus. The Sabah Chapter has over 800 members, including 760 patients.

Meanwhile, the 41-year-old jogger critically injured after being struck by a four-wheel-drive (4WD) near Mile 9 Jalan Apas, Tawau on August 9 has died in hospital.
Tawau police confirmed she passed away at 8:27 am yesterday (August 17). Consequently, the case has been reclassified under Section 44(1)(b) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
Acting Tawau OCPD Supt Champin Piuh stated the victim was jogging with friends around 7:55 pm on August 9 when she was hit by an out-of-control 4WD. The incident occurred after the 4WD first rear-ended a multipurpose vehicle (MPV) driven by a 39-year-old man.
While both drivers escaped unharmed, the jogger sustained severe injuries and was rushed to hospital. The 57-year-old driver of the 4WD was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. – James Leong
