Lahad Datu firemen tackle blaze and rescue in back-to-back emergencies

LAHAD DATU: The Lahad Datu Fire and Rescue Station demonstrated its rapid response capabilities by managing two major emergencies within a 12-hour period, showcasing their readiness for diverse crisis.
The first incident occurred on Monday afternoon when a distress call was received at 2.59 pm reporting a fire involving four wooden houses in Kampung Binuang 1, Jalan Tungku.
A team led by Operations Commander Senior Assistant Fire Superintendent Sumsoa Rashid arrived at the scene within 13 minutes. Through their efforts, the intense blaze was brought under control by 3.53 pm. The operation was fully concluded at 4:45 pm. Fortunately, no casualties were reported in the incident.
Less than 12 hours later, at 5.40 am on Sept 9, the same team was dispatched to a serious road accident on Jalan Tungku near Kampung Sabah Baru. The collision involved a 10-ton lorry and a Proton Iswara Aeroback.
Operations Commander PBK I Mohd. Akhbar Muhambar reported that a 58-year-old male driver was trapped in the car and required extrication by the firemen.
The victim was successfully freed, given initial emergency treatment by the department’s EMRS team, and subsequently transported to the hospital by ambulance. The lorry driver, believed to be in his 30s, was reported to be safe.
The operation was concluded at 6.06 am with cooperation from other agencies.
These back-to-back emergencies underscore the fire and rescue department’s unwavering commitment and efficiency in protecting the community, responding to both fires and rescue operations with equal proficiency. – James Leong
