SANDAKAN: Coastal communities in Sandakan and Beluran districts were spared from significant disruption following a recent high tide event, the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) reported.
Water levels peaked at 2.8 metres in the early hours of Monday. However, calm seas and the absence of rainfall helped prevent serious flooding. APM confirmed that all pre-monitored high-risk zones remained stable, with no reports of major damage, evacuations, or road closures.
In Sandakan, no issues were reported in vulnerable areas such as Kampung Tinusa 2, Kampung Forest, Kampung Sim Sim Jambatan 24, Kampung Air, Kampung Bokara, and Kampung Tabah Baru.
Conditions in Beluran were also largely calm. While tides in Kampung Keramat and Kampung Air remained manageable, minor, knee-deep flooding briefly affected roads in Kampung Seri Menanti and Kampung Kolapis Laut. In Kampung Seri Menanti, floodwater entered one house, but the residents chose to stay as the situation was not deemed dangerous.
APM teams from both districts carried out coordinated patrols from the evening of December 7 into the early morning of December 8, following tide forecasts from the National Hydrographic Centre. The operation involved 12 officers and personnel equipped with full safety gear and supported by vehicles.
“The situation is under control, and we will continue monitoring to ensure public safety,” an APM spokesperson stated. No villages were isolated, no roads were closed, and no evacuation centres were activated during this period. – James Leong
