KINABATANGAN: An elderly woman suffered burns while two houses, a sundry shop, and several vehicles were destroyed in a fire at Kampung Bolot, Tongod, on Wednesday.
According to the Sabah Fire and Rescue Operations Centre, the emergency call regarding the blaze was received at 1.12pm.
Due to the incident’s remote location—156 kilometres from the nearest fire station—assistance from the Kinabatangan Fire and Rescue Station only arrived after more than an hour’s journey, at 2.20 pm.
Firefighting operations began approximately 11 minutes later, led by Operation Commander, PBK I Jasmani Osni.
Two wooden houses (measuring 22×20 feet and 15×20 feet), one wooden sundry shop (18×18 feet), one car, one motorcycle and two boat engines were destroyed in the incident.
A 62-year-old woman sustained burns to her arm. She received initial treatment at the scene by medical personnel from the Ministry of Health.
Firefighters from the Kinabatangan station and the Saguon Kuayup Volunteer Firefighting Squad (PBS) conducted firefighting operations using a single 600-foot hose line fed by a nearby fire hydrant.
The operation was assisted by personnel from the district police, the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM), and the People’s Volunteer Corps (RELA).
Firefighters confirmed the scene was safe before operations concluded at 4.31 pm. The cause of the fire and the estimated losses are still under investigation. – James Leong
