TAWAU: A motorcyclist was killed after being involved in an accident with a lorry along Jalan Tawau-Bombalai on Tuesday.
A motorcycle ridden by a 25-year-old man, was reported to have skidded out of control, veered into the opposite lane, and was thrown into the path of an oncoming rigid lorry at about 3.15 pm, Acting OCPD Supt. Champin Piuh, disclosed in a press release on Wednesday.
According to Champin, the motorcyclist is believed to have lost control before being struck by the lorry’s rear right tyre.
“The road was slightly wet from light drizzle at the time, which is believed to be a contributing factor. The victim sustained severe injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by medical officers from the Ministry of Health ambulance unit,” he said.
The 34-year-old lorry driver was unharmed, he added.
Preliminary investigations revealed the lorry was travelling from the direction of PBJ Quarry, Batu 9 Jalan Apas, heading towards Gudang Empat, while the motorcycle was coming from Felda Umas towards Tawau at the time of the incident, Champin said.
“The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless or dangerous driving causing death,” he further said.
Champin advised all road users to exercise extra caution when roads are slippery due to rain and to obey traffic rules to prevent accidents. – James Leong
