Puspabumi calls for fair opportunities in Semporna

KOTA KINABALU: The Persatuan Pengusaha Syarikat Bumiputera Tempatan Semporna (Puspabumi) has urged the State Government to provide fair opportunities and equal footing for local tourism operators in Semporna.
“The people of Semporna ask for only one thing: a fair opportunity to stand on equal footing and move forward on their own land,” said its Secretary, Anyrishah Mohd Shah.
“Our hopes are clear and straightforward,” she added.
Puspabumi called for the construction of an integrated tourism jetty that not only looks appealing but also ensures visitor safety and provides proper facilities for local operators.
“The existing jetty can no longer cope with the growing number of boats and tourists, causing congestion and raising safety concerns,” Anyrishah said.
The association also urged the implementation of transparent, fair and accountable operational governance.
“Licensing, permits and approval processes should not become barriers that prevent locals from earning a livelihood on their own land.
“What we seek is a system that facilitates business, not one that burdens small operators,” she said.
She said empowering local Bumiputera operators must be a priority.
“Semporna is the gateway to Sipadan, Mabul and world-class marine treasures.
“The question is: who should benefit from this economic spillover if not the people of Semporna themselves?” she said.
Puspabumi also urged the government not merely to establish committees or task forces, but to form a dedicated body that effectively addresses the problems faced by tourism operators in Semporna.
She said resort operators face challenges related to development matters, land approvals and operating licences. – Wu Vuide
