SANDAKAN: Following months of persistent complaints from residents, Elopura Assemblyman Calvin Chong Ket Kiun has conducted an onsite inspection of deteriorating infrastructure at the entrance to Astana Height, demanding immediate repairs from relevant authorities.
The inspection, prompted by resident feedback, revealed that a critical underground pipe has been leaking for nearly three months without comprehensive repairs. This prolonged issue has led to significant road degradation, with minor cracks evolving into hazardous potholes and leaking water creating large, stagnant pools at the site.
Chong emphasised that the neglect has transformed a local inconvenience into a serious public safety hazard.
“The stagnant water is not only accelerating the deterioration of the road structure but also poses a real risk of accidents and damage to vehicles that use this route daily,” he stated.
“If left unaddressed, the damage will worsen exponentially, leading to much higher repair costs for the government in the future.”
The Assemblyman has formally reported the matter to the Water Department and other relevant agencies, urging them to take swift, coordinated action. He stressed the need for improved inter-agency communication to ensure repairs are carried out quickly and effectively.
“These issues directly impact public safety and cannot be allowed to drag on,” Chong added. “Urgent repairs are needed to fix the broken pipe, stop the leak, and fully restore the road surface.”
Chong has pledged to closely monitor the situation until the infrastructure is fully restored. He emphasized the importance of implementing lasting solutions to prevent recurring problems and ensure the long-term safety and sustainability of public infrastructure for the Elopura community. – James Leong
