PENAMPANG: A man’s daring attempt to crash into another car to escape from police failed when he was successfully arrested in an operation on Jalan Penampang Baru, here, early yesterday morning.
In the incident at 2.15am, the 26-year-old man involved was reported to have acted aggressively and struggled with the police before being arrested.
Sabah Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (JSJN) Chief, Assistant Commissioner Alhusin Halil said that the operation carried out by a team of officers and members of the JSJN from the Sabah Police Contingent Headquarters (IPK) successfully tracked down the suspect who was driving a Perodua Axia.
He said that an inspection was attempted after the vehicle driven by the suspect was suspected of being linked to drug distribution and abuse activities.
“When the operations team tried to arrest him, the suspect crashed into a Proton Saga that blocked his path in an attempt to escape.
“After the vehicle was successfully detained, the suspect again tried to escape and acted aggressively, resulting in a struggle with the police,” he said when contacted yesterday.
Alhusin said the raiding team had to use minimal force before successfully arresting the suspect.
He said that the results of the initial investigation led to the discovery of a transparent container containing a plastic packet suspected of containing ecstasy.
“Further inspection found 11 silver-coloured plastic packets with the words ‘PUMPKINS’ and a pumpkin logo containing powder suspected to be ecstasy with a total weight of 370.74 grams.
“Police also seized a Perodua Axia and an iPhone 15 Pro mobile phone for further investigation,” he said.
He said the suspect, who works as a tourist bus driver, was taken along with all the seized items to the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division (BSJN) of the Penampang District Police Headquarters (IPD) for further action.
“Investigations are still ongoing under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 to identify the source of the drug supply and to track down other individuals believed to be involved in the activity,” he said. – Fardy Bungga
