PENAMPANG: Deputy Chief Minister and Industrial Development, Entrepreneurship and Transport Minister Ewon Benedick called on communities to respect the state’s diversity to strengthen cooperation for economic growth.
He also called on the public to remember flood victims in Paitan, Beluran and other affected districts, with prayers and solidarity to help them overcome hardship.
“Sabah’s strength lies in its multicultural society where different ethnic and religious groups celebrate their traditions with mutual respect,” he said when officiating the Penampang Chinese New Year dinner at KDCA Hongkod Koisaan.
He said Penampang must play an active role in implementing the Sabah Maju Jaya development plans and the Penampang development plan launched three years ago, which depend on cooperation among the government, businesses and the community for progress.
He also expressed support for state initiatives to advance industrial and entrepreneurial development, which rely on collective effort.
Moyog Assemblyman Datuk Donald Peter Mojuntin said the Chinese community has long been an integral contributor to Penampang’s development through business, education, welfare and social initiatives.
He said the Kapitans serve as a vital bridge between the people and the government.
Donald said he would continue to support balanced development, broader economic opportunities and assistance for entrepreneurs and small businesses to ensure that young people can build their future.
He said progress must be accompanied by strong values of mutual respect, trust and integrity.
Penampang Municipal Council President Noemi Dyena John Tren said support from community leaders and the Member of Parliament had enabled social programmes to be implemented effectively.
She also acknowledged the Kapitans for playing an important role in safeguarding community welfare and strengthening social harmony.
She expressed hope that cooperation between the local authority, community leaders and residents would continue to be strengthened for the district’s development and well-being.
Organising chairman Alvin Land said the annual event reflects the strength of community cooperation and expressed appreciation for the financial support provided by the Deputy Chief Minister.
He said the gathering was not only a festive tradition but also a platform to strengthen mutual respect and unity among residents of diverse backgrounds.
The programme featured cultural performances, lion dances and presentations honouring the contributions of community figures, as well as appreciation for senior citizens.
